5 Simple Ways to Reduce Electricity Costs in the Philippines

Summer has officially started in the Philippines. While majority of the Filipinos have gone on vacations or travels going to the famous beaches in the country like the newly cleaned Boracay, breathtaking blue and clear waters of Palawan, or some chose to surf and ride the big waves of La Union and Siargao, some just stayed at home. For someone like me with no time or budget to travel, staying at home while the air conditioner is on while binge watching on Netflix is a sort of relief for me. Problem though with this is it comes with a price of paying high electricity bills. So, how can one save electricity?

Use electricity on off-peak hours.

Unpopular to many, Manila Electric Company or MERALCO offers a program which gives a discount on consumers which only consumes during off-peak hours which runs from 9pm – 8am on Mondays to Saturdays and 8pm – 6pm every Sunday. To avail this offering from the power producing giant, as per this site, at least 5 kilowatt hours worth of electricity per month is required to have been consumed regularly. Also, a payment of P27,000 as an enrollment fee should be paid where a new meter would be installed. Also, it is a must that you should have no “No Violation of Contract” or Service Irregularity in your history and a simulation week to a month is required to check if it is really beneficial to you.

Use your appliances efficiently.

Though most of you would tell that by having an energy efficient appliance alone would help you reduce electricity cost, well I also agree with you on that matter as most of the appliances today uses new technologies to reduce the cost of electricity consumption which includes: air conditioners, refrigerators and washing machines which offers inverter type models. But aside from that, you alone or your usage alone can help reduce electricity consumption cost. Here are some tips that you could use to save electricity:

Washing Machine – In order to save electricity when using the washing machine it is highly advised that using it in full loads because using it more frequently with few loads would consume high electricity consumption.

Dryer – Instead of using the dryer, we can opt to dry our clothes under the sun.

Refrigerator – Opening the refrigerator’s door often releases the cold air that keeps your food fresh which is then replaced by warm air. With this,

Unplug devices you are not using it.

While our appliances have their own ON/OFF mechanism, it is not safe to say that although it is turned off, we do not need to unplug our appliance because it does not consume electricity. Whether you like it or not, in reality it does. Although it considerably does not use up too much, it collectively adds up to our monthly bill. In fact, it can be accountable to almost 5% of our residence’s electricity bill.

If you are not okay with plugging every now and then, maybe you could try power strips or even voltage surge protectors which have a power ON/OFF button which can totally turn your appliance off.

Use Curtains and Shut the Doors Closed

According to a study, using curtains does help in dissipating heat in a room. If used properly, it is accounted to remove almost 30% of our room’s heat.

Turn Off Unnecessary Lights

If you are planning to leave the house for long hours and spend the night with your friends it is unnecessary to leave too much light in your house. Maybe you could light one or two which could help you see enough the locks when entering the house.

I Bought a Panther Voltage Surge Protector (Review)

Extension cords are not enough if you have sensitive equipment or devices prone to grounding; sometimes you have to up the electrical protection by purchasing a voltage surge protector for yourself. That’s just exactly what I’ve done three weeks ago. It Was a Dark and Peaceful Night It was on a Friday evening around 9 o’clock when I decided to charge my Huawei Note 10 as the battery level was running low. I plugged it onto the extension cord’s socket and just slept after a short while. Fast forward to 6:30 in the morning, I checked up on the phone and I was surprised it didn’t charge at all. Good thing it’s a Saturday so I went ahead and tried to buy another USB-C connector, but even that was no use. I found out it was grounded. The only conclusion I had was because of a power surge or fluctuation. I had my phone discharged and it was running normally again after one quick charge. That’s when I decided to buy a voltage surge protector to prevent it from happening again.
